How To Survive The First Night Of Your New Home

Packing a ‘first night survival kit’

In our second instalment of Panda’s Paws for Thought we are going to tackle something that many people often end up kicking themselves for not remembering to do – packing a well-equipped ‘first night survival kit’ for the first night in their new home.

What is the most important thing to remember about your first night survival kit?

Your first night survival kit should be loaded last, or it should travel with you. The point of the survival kit is to have what you need where you can easily get to it.

Cleaning and maintenance items

Before unpacking your boxes, you are going to want to do some basic cleaning. Your survival kit should include rags, bleach and cleaners (which can’t travel in the moving van), soap, gloves and trash bags. This should be enough to give your new home a decent cleaning.

It’s also a good idea to bring some toolbox standards like a hammer, screwdriver, pliers and a drill to do any immediate household repairs and hang mirrors and pictures.

Don’t assume that there will be working light fixtures in every room (even if the electricity is on). Come prepared with light bulbs and flashlights.

Getting a perfect night’s sleep

Next, make sure that your bed is 100% ready to be used. If your place is already furnished properly, then there should be a bed, or beds to be exact, awaiting your arrival. In that case, unpack the bedding and make your bed as soon as you can to know you have something to look forward to if it’s still too early for bed.

If your new home doesn’t come completely furnished, then set aside tome to re-assemble your old bed or have a professional do it for you. Once you’re ready with that, it’s time to turn your attention to the bathroom as a refreshing shower will surely be high on your priority list. Muster your last ounces of energy to arrange your toiletries, hang the shower curtain, stack up toilet paper, and finally prepare the towels and bathrobe.

To have a comfortable first night in your new home you will want convenient access to your important everyday items.

These items can include:

  • Pyjamas
  • Bedding
  • Toiletries
  • Towels
  • Shower curtains
  • Medication
  • Mobile phone and charger
  • A good book or your music player
  • Tablet/laptop computer

Meals and snacks

You will likely eat out for your first few meals, and it may be a while before you can unpack your dishes, so make sure you have plates, cups and utensils to eat and drink with.

Pack portable, high-protein snacks and lots of water. Granola bars, crisps, nuts, bananas and apples are the sort of things you’ll appreciate having on hand.

Our Reviews

I would highly recommend this removal company to everyone. The removal men arrived exactly on time and were friendly, pleasant and polite during the whole move. I don’t think I could have asked for a better removal experience.

Moved under difficult circumstances and with very poor service from conveyancers meaning we exchanged on the day of the move. GoPanda were very understanding and accommodating even when I was unable to confirm anything. Throughout the move everyone worked like a Trojan and completed the move successfully. I contacted other companies with this job, some of whom were quick to suggest I would be gambling on GoPanda. It was a gamble well worth taking and my experience would suggest competitors’ allegations were without foundation. I would definitely use GoPanda again (though I have no intention of moving) and recommend to others.

Go Panda gave us a competitive quote and then completed the move ahead of schedule and with great respect for our belongings. Andrew and his team were efficient, courteous and went above and beyond their contracted duties. I would not hesitate in recommending them highly.

The first time we’ve used this company, and we’ve moved around a bit! They were brilliant, friendly, calm and efficient. It felt like they really cared about our stuff and their assembly service was great. I’d recommend them to family and friends. They made a potentially stressful day fun!

Having used Go Panda for moving house three times now, and about to use them for the fourth time, I thought it was high time I left a review, considering how brilliant the service has been every time.

Go Panda’s team are all so friendly and helpful, and they’ve always quoted me accurately and given brilliant prices and, most importantly, a great service.

The utmost care and attention is given to your valuable items and they’re completely flexible and accommodating when it comes to loading, transporting and unloading your belongings.

I never thought such a brilliant removal service was possible until I discovered Go Panda. Thank you again.
